For a long time now, educators have been aware that summer vacation can be academically unhealthy for students of all ages. In fact, research shows that students lose up to 25 - 30% of their math and reading skills over summer vacation.

A recent study suggests that the impact of school closures due to COVID-19 will result in students returning “in fall 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year. However, in mathematics, students are likely to show much smaller learning gains, returning with less than 50% of the learning gains and in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would observe in normal conditions.”

Research also shows that summer learning programs like Peach State Tutoring’s Summer Jump Start “can mitigate summer learning losses and even lead to achievement gains” which can last for “at least two years after the student has engaged in the summer program.”

Summer Jump Start

Peach State Tutoring & Test Prep is offering the Summer Jump Start series to help your child make up for missed content in the spring semester and get a jump start on fall content.

How does Summer Jump Start work?

Students and parents choose the topics they want to focus on and share their availability with Peach State Tutoring’s staff who will then create a customized schedule for your student.

Summer Jump Start for each topic involves a 10-session program with each session lasting 1 hour. The team at Peach State Tutoring will work with you to create a schedule that is most convenient for your child.

The goal is to complete the program before school starts so that the student is fully prepared for the upcoming academic year.

What is covered in each program?

Depending on the topic, your child will cover the first 2 to 3 months of content from their fall 2020 courses. The instructors will adjust the curriculum and assignments based on your child’s needs. Some students have mastered all the necessary topics from previous years and can move forward quickly while others may need to review some concepts from the last year to ensure that there are no gaps in their understanding as they move into their fall 2020 coursework.

What topics are available?

The following topics are available for Summer Jump Start. Each session is taught by expert instructors with Masters or PhDs in their field of instruction. Students should register for subjects they will be taking in fall 2020.
