Preschool is a significant milestone for your little one, providing an opportunity to interact with their peers, make new friends, and start their educational journey. However, preparing for such a transition isn’t always easy. Simplify the process by considering the following tips to help boost their excitement for the coming school year.

A Guide to Preschool Preparation for Your Child

1. Use Pretend

Not knowing what to expect can cause feelings of nervousness. Put their mind at ease by setting up a pretend preschool at home. Familiarizing them with a new routine will keep them comfortable in their new surroundings.

Have them practice saying good-bye to mommy or daddy and placing their backpack and coat in a designated area, like a cubby. Act out a few of the activities they may encounter in their new environment, such as singing songs, snack time, and playing outdoors.

2. Read Books

preschoolYour local library will have plenty of books about preschool. Check out a few and spend some time reading to your little one. Point out fun things in each of the pictures and ask them their favorite activity.

Putting a positive spin on the upcoming change could increase their excitement and ensure they’re ready when the time comes to start school.

3. Be Available

Your child might need time to process the idea of being away from home. When they’re ready to talk, sit down and hear them out. Make sure they understand their feelings are normal and share a time when you were experiencing some level of worry. Remind them that you love them and offer something that they can take, such as a family photo, for when they’re feeling lonely.

4. Plan A Visit

Schedule a tour with your little one so they can see everything up close. Show them their classroom and encourage them to introduce themselves to the teacher. Having you nearby while they explore this new environment could put them at ease and help them realize it’s not such a scary transition.
