If you’re thinking about getting a gravel driveway, you’re probably wondering what kind of maintenance is required to keep it looking and functioning like new. Luckily, gravel driveways can last for up to a hundred years with basic maintenance each season.

4 Maintenance Tips for Gravel Driveways

1. Fix Potholes

Potholes can form in gravel driveways due to weak points in the base, just as they can in paved driveways. When you notice a dip in one section, rake away gravel from that section and then add smaller aggregate to the base to even it out. You can then add larger gravel over it, compacting each layer as you go.

2. Clear Debris

3. Check Drainage

Gravel tends to provide very effective drainage, so if you notice puddles forming on one part of your driveway, rake that spot and add new gravel to break up pieces that may be lodged together. You should also make sure the driveway is properly graded, so water naturally veers toward the edges rather than the center.

4. Prevent Plant Growth

Even if you have landscaping fabric installed underneath your driveway, weeds and grass can sometimes pop up around the surface. Spray the edges or any spots where plants are trying to sneak through with weed killer or herbicide.
