Laminate flooring has the elegant, natural look of hardwood minus the hefty price tag. While it has similar beauty features, it comes with different maintenance requirements than hardwood. If you want to keep your flooring in the best condition possible, follow the tips below.

Do:

1. Keep it clean.

Even though laminate flooring is relatively tough, dirt and dust particles can dull its shine and scratch the surface as you walk across it. To prevent this problem, give your floors a good sweep every week or vacuum frequently to eliminate the build-up of dust, crumbs, and other loose debris.

Avoid using a steam cleaner or wet mop as they leave behind moisture that can cause it to swell, crack, or bubble. Instead, use a dry or damp mop.

2. Go natural with your cleaning arsenal.

Harsh chemicals can strip away the protective seal, veneer, and adhesive of your laminate flooring. It’s best to check the manufacturer’s recommendations when it comes to cleaning solutions. You could, however, mix vinegar and dish soap with hot water to wipe the floors. Remember to use these solvents sparingly to keep excess moisture away from the floor, preventing damage.

Don’t:

1. Use anything abrasive.

laminate flooringIt’s easy to scratch laminate flooring, which means you should refrain from using abrasive materials for cleaning. Avoid steel wool, hard-bristled brooms, and rotating brush vacuum attachments as they can scrape and scuff the protective finish. Instead, opt for soft materials made of cotton, microfiber, or chamois.

You can also protect the floor’s coating by laying down mats and rugs at entryways to your home. That way, you and your guest can remove outdoor mud and debris from your shoes instead of tracking it inside. Pet nails, shoe heels, and other sharp objects can damage the flooring surface, so be mindful of these as well.

2. Let spills and stains sit.

Again, too much water is harmful to your laminate flooring, so try to clean up spills as they happen. Letting them sit creates stubborn stains that give your floors a dull or discolored look. When removing stains, try home remedies first before turning to harsh cleaners. Carefully scrape off hardened stains with a plastic putty knife, or use a tennis ball to remove scuffs. Rubbing alcohol works well for inks, crayons, nail polish, and shoe polish.
