A well provides your property with an exclusive water source free of harsh chemicals and municipal fees. Each model offers advantages depending on your well’s depth and related needs. If you recently scheduled well drilling and need to choose the best pump for your water source, learn more about pump types below.

What Kinds of Pumps Are There?

Well pumps come in two main types, jet, and submersible. Jet pumps typically sit in small enclosures and use an electric motor-powered impeller to move water from the well through the orifice jet. The water is then sent into housing located in front of the impeller. As water flows through the narrow jet, the speed increases. Water exiting the jet creates a vacuum that moves more water from the well, sending it through a pipe and into your home. Jet pumps for shallow wells provide about 25 feet of suction, while those for deep wells offer over 100 feet of suction.

Submersible wells also provide shallow and deep well services, but unlike jet pumps, work within the well. They feature waterproof properties that prevent contact with electrical components and push water upward with their motors and impellers instead of creating suction. The impeller draws water into the component to push it to the surface through a connecting pipe.

Which One Is Right for You?

Those up to 110 feet typically require double-drop jet pumps that provide more power by using two pipes instead of one to move water. Wells between 110 and 400 feet should rely on submersible pumps. This is because the water table is low and requires even more power to draw the liquid to the surface.

Submersible pumps also last longer than jet pumps because they push rather than pull water, and are not as vulnerable to mechanical failure. Staying submerged in water also keeps the motor cool, whereas jet pump motors can burn out relatively quickly. However, jet pumps offer easier repairs because they are above ground.
