Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June 1 until the end of November, and you should always be prepared. To do so, you’ll need to compile a comprehensive emergency kit full of items that will help you stay safe and comfortable. From fuel to flashlights, here are a few essentials you should have.

What to Put in Your Hurricane Emergency Kit

1. Flashlight

Strong winds and falling tree branches often knock down power lines during hurricanes. If you lose power, a flashlight will ensure you can still find your way around the house at night. Pack extra batteries too, as you may run the flashlight for extended periods.

2. First-Aid Kit

fuelPack a first-aid kit, so you have basic medical supplies readily available. Include over-the-counter painkillers, Band-Aids®, bandages and gauze, and antibacterial disinfectant for minor scrapes. To save yourself time, purchase a pre-made kit.

3. Food & Water

Keep at least two weeks’ worth of non-perishable foods on hand. Supermarkets may not be readily available for some time, and it may not be safe to leave the shelter of your home. Opt for canned and dry goods that won’t spoil, like peanut butter, soup, and Spam®. Be sure to add a can opener to your kit in case your canned goods don’t have a pull tab.

4. Portable Generator

If the electricity goes out, a backup generator will allow you to stay connected by powering radios and smartphones. You can also hookup small appliances, like an electric cooktop or mini-fridge, so you can enjoy modern conveniences while the power is out.

The average generator has a 7.5-gallon fuel tank and will last about ten hours at 50% capacity. Stock up on fuel to ensure your generator will have the power it needs to run your essentials as long as you need it to.
