Though the summer offers picturesque weather, the accompanying temperature rise can overheat your car and result in the need for auto repairs if you’re not careful. Here are a few ways to protect your car from overheating this summer.

How to Keep Your Car Cool in the Summer

1. Shade the Car

Parking your car in the shade can greatly reduce how much it heats up. If you don’t have a shady place to park, purchase window shades that will block the sun. They’ll not only reduce cabin temperatures but also prevent the UV rays from damaging your interior.

2. Leave the Windows Slightly Open

When parked, leave your windows slightly open to let the outside breeze flow through and help cool down your car. If your car is tightly shut, the hot glass will conduct and circulate heat in the enclosed space.

Check the weather to ensure a summer rain shower is not on its way. You don’t want to walk out to your car to find the seats wet.

3. Inspect the Radiator Cap

The radiator cap keeps a steady pressure on the coolant system to keep it from overheating or overflowing with fluid. While the cap starts off tightly screwed in place, it can degrade over time and let in leaks of air. With less pressure on your system, your engine can quickly overheat.

Check that your engine has completely cooled down before touching your radiator cap. The liquid inside will heat up the cap and burn you if you touch it too soon.

4. Check the Coolant

Your car’s engine uses coolant to keep its temperature down. Check it regularly, as degraded coolant won’t work effectively. Discoloration or residue indicates it’s time to clean the coolant system and refresh the coolant.

Also, keep an eye on the coolant levels. Low coolant is a common cause of overheating. Keep extra coolant on hand, so you can refill when necessary.
