Fumigation is a common method used for termite control. Though more involved than other processes, this step is sometimes necessary for infestations that have gotten completely out of hand. Before the exterminator arrives, however, you will want to prepare your home and family. Here is how you should get ready.

How to Prep for Termite Fumigation

1. Remove Exterior Obstructions

The fumigation tent must stay in place to provide comprehensive termite control. As part of this, you may need to rake back mulch or gravel that is against the side of the house. Soaking dirt areas can also help the tent remain sealed in place. Your fumigator will help you determine if any plants that are adjacent to the house might interfere with the fumigation process.

2. Find a Place to Stay

You will typically need to stay away for two or three nights, so plan accordingly with spare clothing, toiletries, and other necessities. Just don’t forget to leave a key for the fumigator to do their work.

3. Remove Indoor Plants & Pets

Fumigation is harmful to more than just termites. Because of this, you should also remove indoor plants and pets from your house. As with finding accommodations for your family, make plans well in advance for finding a place for plant and animal life. Food should also either be removed from your home or sealed inside special fumigation bags. You don’t want to risk fumigation contamination harming you after the fact.
