As temperatures start to rise, more homeowners upgrade their air conditioning systems to ensure comfort come summer. Ductless AC units don’t require ductwork and offer several benefits, including energy efficiency and remote control. If you want to install a new unit, the guide below explains the difference between your two options to help you determine which variety you need.

How do Single-Zone Ductless Systems Work?

This system uses one indoor unit to cool a space within the home. The indoor unit connects to an outside compressor that chills the air. This option is similar to a window air conditioning unit in that it controls the climate of a single room, but it’s built into the wall.

Single-zone systems are popular for home additions and rooms that don’t accommodate ductwork. Since you can set its own temperature, it’s also beneficial for rooms that have unique climate concerns, like attics and sunrooms.

How Do Multi-Zone Ductless Systems Work?

ductless acThis system also utilizes a single outside component, but has multiple indoor units to cool various parts of a home. You can set specific rooms to cooler temperatures based on your family members’ preferences, and save money by only cooling the areas that are in use.

Since this type of ductless AC controls the climate of the entire home, it’s especially popular for older constructions and houses that don’t have existing ductwork. While it’s an alternative to central air, it allows for greater control since temperatures are set based on individual spaces.
