Allergy season is in full swing. From high pollen levels to dust accumulation, the season causes sneezes and runny noses. While it might seem time to just buckle down and deal with it, there is a simpler method for increasing the family’s health. All you need is a few timely precautions and routine maintenance for the air conditioning system.

How to Reduce Allergens This Spring

1. Swap Out Filters

Pollen is made up of tiny particles that work their way into the air conditioning system. Having filters in place is the only way to prevent them from spreading throughout the home.

However, once the material reaches full capacity, it won’t keep additional particles from slipping past. Check the filters at least once a month to determine a need for replacement.

2. Use Air Purifiers

Some use multiple materials while others create negatively charged ions to remove particles from the atmosphere, leaving the air free and clear to breathe.

3. Clean Around Condenser

Leaves, twigs, and other outdoor debris collect around the exterior component of your air conditioning system. As they begin to deteriorate, tiny particles get into the unit and infiltrate the home.

Rake the area until there are at least two feet of clearance around the condenser. Bag everything up for trash to prevent future accumulation.

4. Clean Interior Vents

Floor vents develop clumps of dust and pollen. Over time, these can filter into the system and detract from internal air quality.

Removing the covers and vacuuming them out at least once a week will prevent clogs. Wipe down the interior with a microfiber cloth to keep the system free and clear.
