Taking someone new to the shooting range is an exciting way to spend time together. You naturally want to share this hobby with those close to you, and making the first experience at the range successful will help them enjoy it. Below are a few tips and common mistakes to ensure a safe and fun first experience with firearms.

Do:

Go over safety.

Review the rules of firearm safety before you arrive at the shooting range. This will keep everyone safe, and help them and everyone else at the range stay comfortable. Teach them to treat firearms as if they are loaded and keep the muzzle pointed downrange. You should also explain what a ceasefire is, and what gear to wear, such as eye and ear protection.

Allow them to get comfortable with the weapon.

shooting rangeAfter choosing a firearm to use, you should explain how it works and point out the necessary controls. This includes showing them how to load a magazine, cock the weapon, and use the safety switch. Keep it simple to avoid overwhelming them, and give them time to handle the firearm before firing it. Let them “dry fire” it with no ammunition, so they feel comfortable holding the gun and learn about the trigger.

Don’t:

Start with big guns.

You will have time to pull out larger weapons with a significant recoil later. You should start with smaller ammunition to ensure the new person can handle the gun and control it as it fires. Their first time, the excitement comes from hitting the target and feeling successful, rather than being accurate or using more powerful weapons.

Nitpick or criticize too much.

People will turn away from a hobby if you criticize them too much the first time they try it. It may be tempting to correct every mistake you notice but stick to the basics. Keep it positive, only pointing out the safety errors and complimenting everything they do right. Be patient, and you’ll both have fun.
