When it comes to wildlife control, foxes and coyotes require different approaches to remove them from an area humanely. Learning to recognize their differences will help you explain your situation to a wildlife control professional, so they can bring the appropriate equipment and catch them more quickly. If you see a similar creature on your property, review the guide below to help you identify what it is.

Foxes

Foxes are smaller than coyotes, weighing up to 20 pounds, and they resemble small to medium dogs or large cats at a glance. They’re usually gray or red, with fluffy tails that are nearly as long as their bodies. Their muzzles are also somewhat squat and thick, and they eat small animals as well as insects and fruit. Additionally, they tend to move in lithe, quick manners and are often alone or with their mates or young ones. Finally, foxes are primarily nocturnal hunters, and they pose little to no threats to humans. They’ll often run from people and noise, though small pets and livestock may be vulnerable.

Coyotes

Coyotes resemble large dogs, and they can weigh up to 50 pounds. They’re often multi-colored with gray, white, red, brown, and black fur. Their tails aren’t very bushy and are shorter than their bodies, with coarser hair than foxes. Coyotes also live in packs, and this, combined with their size, means they can hunt larger prey, including deer, sheep, and goats.

Coyotes pose a somewhat more significant threat to isolated homes in the country, as they can kill livestock and pets. While human attacks are rare and not usually fatal, they’re not unheard of, as coyotes are bolder than foxes because of their numbers. If you’re concerned about your livestock or children due to a large coyote population, wildlife control may be able to help.
