With spring underway, many people who have allergies experience uncomfortable symptoms, including sneezing and itching. Taking antihistamines isn’t the only path to relief, as your HVAC system is designed to catch allergens. Whether you have a central or ductless system, follow the tips below to keep everyone comfortable this season.

How to Reduce Allergy Symptoms at Home

1. Change Air Filters

The filters in your HVAC system remove pollutants from the air, including dust, mold, and pet dander. However, over time, they become clogged and ineffective. Not only does this allow allergens to recirculate, but it also causes the HVAC units to work harder than necessary.

If you have ductless systems, clean their air filters every two weeks. Generally, it’s best to change them every 30 to 90 days. If you have pets or use the AC frequently, change them every month.

2. Clean Regularly

The outdoor component pulls in the air that circulates through your home, so it can bring additional dust and pollen inside. If you have a central HVAC system, wipe any dust that collects around the vents.

While you’re at it, give your house a thorough cleaning to remove the allergens that come inside. Vacuum and mop every week.

3. Schedule HVAC Maintenance

If your loved ones have allergies, it's especially important not to skip regular HVAC maintenance. If you have ductwork, professionals access those hard-to-reach corners and remove mold, mildew, and allergens so you can breathe easier all season long. They also identify refrigerant leaks, drain condensate hoses, and look for malfunctioning parts.

Get your HVAC system serviced at least twice a year. Do so once in the spring so professionals can fix any issues before the heat sets in, then again in the fall before it gets too cold.
