Choosing fabric for your quilting masterpiece that blends well is key to a beautiful finished product, though it may seem difficult when you have countless options. If you’re just starting out, here are a few tips to craft a cohesive quilt design.

How to Successfully Choose Quilt Fabric

1. Use Quilt Kits

A quilt kit takes the guesswork out of fabric selection. These kits are curated by designers, so you're guaranteed to have materials that work together visually. It’s a huge time saver and an easy way to get started with quilting.

2. Choose Coordinating Colors

If you're more confident in your quilt design skills and want to choose your own fabrics, start with a color palette. It’s often easiest to stick to one color family; for example, if you choose green, select other emerald shades.

But if you want more variety, you can use multiple main colors, as long as they stay within the same light or dark tone. For example, if you want a quilt pattern of greens, blues, and purples, don’t use sky blue, dark avocado green, and bright violet. Instead, try pastel blue, sage, and lavender.

3. Vary the Scale

If you only use small dot patterns, your quilt will end up looking busy. On the other hand, if you have only large, spaced-out diamond patterns, your quilt will lack contrast. Varying the scale of the prints will make your quilt visually interesting yet not overwhelming and provide places for the eye to rest.

4. Add a Pop of Color

As long as the shades don’t clash, sporadic variations in color add a dynamic aspect to the finished product. Choose from the opposite side of the color wheel from your main shades for a hue that will stand out without being jarring. For example, if you have mostly greens and grays, try a contrasting pink throughout the quilt design.
