Many companies require drug testing of employees to ensure that the workplace environment remains safe and productive. There are several different types of drug tests that may identify the presence of both illegal and prescription drugs in a person’s system. Consult the following guide to learn about these methods so you can determine the best one for your business.

4 Common Types of Employee Drug Tests

1. Hair

The body produces metabolites as a byproduct of ingested substances. Since drug metabolites enter the scalp’s blood vessels, hair retains traces of what you’ve consumed over time. However, because of the long history these tests provide, they may yield inconclusive results as to a person’s current drug use.

2. Urine

Urine tests can detect the presence of THC, cocaine, opiates, and methamphetamine and are popular among employers for on-site drug testing because samples are easy to collect.

3. Saliva

Since saliva tests are not as invasive as urine and blood tests, they are popular for detecting drugs in the body. After swabbing the mouth with an absorbent device, saliva tests can detect cannabinoids, opioids, and amphetamine that a person may have used within the past four to 10 hours. The results can usually be returned quickly.

4. Blood

Blood testing, though more expensive and invasive, provides the most accurate results because it detects trace amounts of any drugs that have been used within the past six hours. It also tests for a wider range of substances, including alcohol, THC, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and opiates, which makes it more comprehensive than a saliva test.

Since employees who are under the influence of drugs may put themselves or others in a dangerous situation or hinder productivity, Artesia Drug and Alcohol Screening provides employers with various drug testing options.
