When you’re heading off to college for the first time, you may feel like you need to pack up your whole life. However, knowing what makes sense to bring and what you can leave behind will mean less work before the movers come. Here is a guide to what you should and shouldn’t do as you start packing up for the first semester.

Do:

Consult with your roommate.

Before you start packing, it’s a good idea to touch base with your roommate. After a discussion, you can cut down on redundancies. Having an extra TV or mini-fridge will only take up space in the room.

Pack some formal attire.

College is a land of opportunity, so it makes sense to have at least one formal outfit. An employer may visit the campus, granting interviews for a potential summer internship, or you might have a final presentation where you need to look your best.

Don’t:

Bring anything prohibited.

moversEvery college has rules about what’s permitted in a dorm room. Remember to look at the list, or you might end having to sell, ship home, or even throw out something you’ve brought, like a toaster or set of string lights.

Bring clothes that are out of season.

In your college dorm, you’ll have limited closet space, so only bring the clothes you’ll wear. For the fall semester, you likely won’t need summer garments. You’ll have a chance to go home during the break between semesters and maybe even other holidays, so you can swap out clothes then.
