When it comes to dental procedures, root canals have an unfair reputation for being unpleasant. This treatment is reserved for instances when tooth decay has reached the pulp and root of the tooth. Most people receive anesthesia and only feel a bit of pressure as the dentist works. You can also alleviate discomfort during and after your appointment by taking some steps ahead of time.

How to Get Ready for a Root Canal

1. Pick Up Medication in Advance

Avoiding infection after your root canal is important, and your dentist will likely prescribe a course of antibiotics. Discuss any prescriptions ahead of time so you can visit the pharmacy before your appointment. This way, you can begin your treatment without having to stop at the drugstore on your way home from the dentist’s office.

2. Take Pain Medication

A few hours before the procedure, take a pain medication like ibuprofen to help reduce any inflammation that could cause discomfort. Check with your dentist to confirm that you should take a medication and follow their recommendations for dosage and timing.

3. Have a Meal

After your root canal, you may not want or be able to eat for a few hours. An empty stomach will only make you more uncomfortable, so have a light meal before your appointment. Eating also gives your body vital nutrients so it can start healing more quickly.

4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The human body does a great deal of healing during sleep, and adequate rest is key to maintaining a healthy immune system. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep ahead of the procedure to support healing and reduce the risk of infection.

5. Avoid Alcohol & Smoking

Drinking alcohol within 24 hours of your appointment can cause your mouth to dry out and could complicate the root canal procedure. It also increases recovery time. Smoking is also detrimental before and after the procedure, as it slows healing.
