It takes seconds for a house fire to break out, and acting quickly can be the difference between saving and losing your home, and even life and death. Knowing the location of the nearest fire extinguisher and what to do are crucial parts of any preparedness plan, and you’ll want to make sure you use the following guide for your safety.

What Can You Do During a House Fire?

1. Alert Others

Your first act should be to shout “fire” to alert family members. Don’t ask that they help, instead, make sure they follow a pre-planned exit route to safely evacuate your home. Do this even if it’s a minor fire that seems controllable and remind them to call 9-1-1 immediately. You don’t want to chance anyone’s safety.

2. Grab the Nearest Fire Extinguisher

Use the nearest fire extinguisher if you can safely reach it. Pull the safety pin, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, and squeeze the trigger. Sweep the jet in a side to side motion. If the fire extinguisher doesn’t work, or if there isn’t one in reach, exit the home right away.

3. Test Doors & Close Them Behind You

If they’re warm, there may be fire on the other side of the door, and you’ll want to take your alternative route. As you move along, close doors behind you to stop the fire from spreading. If doorways are blocked, move to the nearest window and climb out.

4. Crawl Below the Smoke

If smoke is already filling your home, drop and crawl toward the exit. Smoke is extremely toxic can may render you unconscious if breathed in too long. Staying low will keep you below the smoke, and covering your nose and mouth with a cloth will help filter it.
