Moving can be a time consuming and hectic ordeal. You have to take care of everything from packing up the house to scheduling the movers before you can officially change your residence. However, if you have a dog, the moving process can be even more challenging. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow to ensure a smooth transition for you and your furry friend.

Do:

Leave their toys out.

moversWhile it may be tempting to pack up your dog’s playthings as soon as you start packing, you should wait until the last minute to box up their toys. As you prepare to move, the house will begin to look and feel different to them, but having their toys readily available will give them comfort. The toys will also keep your pet preoccupied.

Find someone to pet-sit on the day of the move.

You and the movers will have a lot to do on the day of the big move. Allowing your pet to roam around the house while the movers are loading the truck is a hazard. Your dog could get in the way and cause an accident. Consider asking a friend or relative to watch your pet while you empty the house. Not only will this help keep everyone safe, but it will also ensure that your furry friend is well taken care of.

Don’t:

Neglect your pet.

As you pack up your belongings, your pet may sense that things are changing, which can be distressing for them. Though your plate will be full, don’t forget about your dog. Set aside a few minutes every day to play with them and reassure them to keep them calm throughout the moving process.

Assume your dog will immediately like your new home.

Sometimes it takes a while for a pet to adjust to new surroundings. Once you bring them to your new house, don’t expect them to accept the change immediately. However, you can reduce their anxiety by not leaving them alone for a long time until they become familiar with their new environment.
