Traveling takes a toll on the eyes. If you’re flying, for example, you’ll have to contend with dry cabin air, and if you’re driving, you’ll have to deal with extended sun exposure. Thankfully, you can protect your vision en route and abroad by following a few simple eye care tips.

3 Eye Care Tips for Travel

1. Wear Glasses on Lengthy Legs

If your trip includes an especially long flight or drive, wear your glasses instead of contacts during that stretch. If you fall asleep while wearing contact lenses, you’ll wake up with dry, irritated eyes. Even contacts designed for extended wear must be removed and disinfected at least once a week. If you intend to wear them during a six- or seven-day trip, wait until you reach your destination to put contacts in.

2. Practice Good Hygiene

eye careRoutine often goes out the window while traveling, and diligent hygiene habits tend to go with it. For example, even if you always wash off your makeup before bed at home, you might be inclined to go to sleep while still wearing it on the road. No matter how hectic your trip is, you should make it a point to wash your face at the end of each day. This will prevent several eye issues, including irritation, infection, and cornea scratches, especially if you wear mascara or eyeliner. Also, be sure to remove your contacts as instructed, taking care to clean and store them properly.

3. Limit Your Screen Time

E-readers and tablets are perfect for passing the time while traveling but staring at a screen for hours can cause eye strain. To prevent burning, itching, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and headaches en route, take frequent breaks from your digital devices, and apply artificial tears as needed.
