The lymph nodes and vessels in your body are responsible for carrying waste away from your cells, which helps to facilitate healing and other normal bodily functions. However, when the lymph system fails, you may be left with lymphedema, or swelling around the lymph area where this natural drainage process didn’t occur. The guide below explains this condition in more depth.

Understanding Lymphedema

What is it?

Lymphedema occurs when your lymph system no longer removes the fluids and proteins that naturally circulate around the cells under your skin. It is particularly common in the arms, hands, legs, and feet, but can also occur in the abdomen, neck, or even face.

lymphedemaWhat are the symptoms?

Lymphedema can cause rapid swelling of the affected areas, and since the proteins around the cells are also not removed, the area can become hard and inflexible. Affected areas can develop a heavy sensation.

Swelling can become so significant that pitting in the skin may be visible, especially in areas such as around joints.

What causes it?

Lymphedema has several causes, but one of the most common is cancer treatment. When lymph nodes are removed during treatment, it can interfere with the body’s ability to remove its own lymph. A predisposition to acquire lymphedema can also be inherited. However, 80% of cases occur within 3 years following surgery

What treatments are available?

Treatments that have been shown to help include wrapping the affected area, exercising, or even undergoing a minimally-invasive procedure called manual lymph drainage. During this process, the skin is carefully massaged to encourage the body to rid itself of the excess fluid.

Additionally, some people get regular acupuncture to alleviate symptoms. A recent study showed that the careful insertion of needles into the affected areas can decrease the size of the swelling and restore some range of motion.
