As people learn to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses have found themselves facing endless challenges. While consumers obey stay-at-home orders and keep themselves safe, it doesn’t mean they can’t support the cafes, retail shops, and other businesses they love. Here are a few steps you can take to help your favorite small businesses thrive.

How to Support Local Businesses During the Pandemic

1. Buy Gift Cards

Many states have called for nonessential businesses to shutter operations. Some of these companies are unable to offer their goods or services online, which means they’re also unable to earn profits until stay-at-home orders are lifted. While you can’t patronize these businesses currently, you can support them financially by purchasing gift cards to use in the future.

2. Order Takeout or Delivery

cafeSmall businesses that specialize in food and drink—including restaurants, bars, cafes, and coffee shops—have gotten creative when serving their customers. Many offer takeout or delivery services, allowing you to safely enjoy your favorite meals in the comfort of your home. Some bars are also offering to-go beer and wine orders to accompany their food menus. When ordering food from a local business, tip graciously if you can.

3. Maintain Memberships

Even if they undergo significant changes, gyms, clubs, and other establishments requiring memberships will return. If you’re able, consider maintaining your memberships to such places to ensure they receive support. If you’re concerned about costs, speak with their management to see if you can receive a discounted membership for the time being.
