If your long-trusted refrigerator is starting to show signs of wear and tear, you may have to assess if it needs appliance maintenance or if it is time to start looking for a replacement fridge. Below are four common signs that your refrigerator will need to be replaced soon.

What to Look For if You Think Your Refrigerator is Dying

1. Condensation or Frost

Refrigerators have to maintain a balance of the right internal temperature. While this requires plenty of energy to do, the appliance should not overwork itself. If you notice condensation or frost forming on the outside or inside of the fridge, your fridge might be using too much power.

You want to first check to see that the doors close all the way. If you leave them open slightly or if the rubber sealing has warped and will not seal it all the way, then condensation or frost can appear. Close your refrigerator on a dollar bill and see if it sticks in place. If it does, then your rubber sealing is doing its job, but if it slips out with ease, then the issue lies with the sealing.

2. Perishing Food

If you notice your food spoiling much faster than usual, then your fridge might not be keeping it cold enough. Check to see that the refrigerator’s temperature gauge is set between 37 and 41 degrees and the doors seal tightly. If the temperature says it is in range and the doors seal, then you’ll need to schedule appliance maintenance or purchase a new fridge.

3. Hot Surface

Your refrigerator will naturally emanate some heat as it strives to cool down its interior, but if there is a problem with its ventilation system, the appliance’s surface will grow much hotter. The back of the fridge will always feel warmer than the front because it’s where the motor is located. However, if it starts letting off an excessive amount of heat, your fridge may be on its last leg.

Before buying a new one, first check the fridge’s coils. They might just need a cleaning or replacement.

4. Loud Motor

If you hear your fridge revving up to regulate its temperature more frequently or more loudly, then you might be dealing with a malfunctioning refrigerator motor. If left unfixed, this extra effort will rack up your energy bills. When you notice any new and continual sounds, contact a professional to inspect your fridge and give you appliance maintenance advice.
