After an emergency situation, your homeowner insurance policy will help compensate you for any damages. And in a worse case scenario, a proper life insurance policy will help those you might leave behind. But being properly prepared for any situation will help ensure that your family remains safe in the meantime. Daniel Oliver - Farmers Insurance Agent serves Minneapolis, MN, residents and businesses, and he recommends keeping an emergency home preparedness kit ready at all times.

At a minimum, your family's emergency kit should contain the following items:

  • Water: At a minimum, you should count on needing at least a gallon of water per person, per day. For evacuations, you'll need to bring enough for three days, and a two week supply if you're stranded in your home.
  • Non-Perishable Food: Stock items that are easy to prepare and require a minimum amount of resources, in similar quantities to your water supply.
  • Flashlight With Extra Batteries: When the power goes out, you'll need some light in order to keep your family safe and protected.
  • Radio: Make sure you pack a battery-operated or hand-crank unit so you can stay up-to-date on any emergency broadcasts.
  • First Aid Kit: Get one with a more comprehensive set of supplies, and include any specialty items you need, along with a week's supply of any medications your family needs.
  • Multi-Purpose Tool: A good multi-purpose tool will come in handy in any emergency situation.
  • Personal Hygiene Supplies: Poor sanitation in an emergency situation can pose a serious health risk, so make sure you have enough bathroom tissue, soap, and other products, along with a garbage disposal plan.
  • Personal Documents: Don't forget to include copies of your driver's licenses, birth and marriage certificates, property deeds, and other important documents you may need.
