Often, the visible portion of the roof—typically, its shingles—is what comes to mind when we think of its parts. Yet, roofing systems have far more components than the uppermost layer alone. Each piece plays an important role, and when one aspect of the system is damaged, roof repairs will be needed to prevent further damage. Discover the key elements of your roof and what could go wrong with each below.

5 Components of a Roofing System

1. Decking

Commonly made from plywood or oriented strand board, decking serves as a roof’s base layer. It connects to the rafters and is the foundation upon which upper layers of the roof are placed. While there are other moisture-resistant layers to prevent water from reaching the decking, should this component ever get wet, roof repairs or a full replacement may be needed to prevent widespread mold or water damage in your home.

2. Underlayment

Next, the underlayment is placed atop the decking. Featuring a durable synthetic underlayment created by weaving/spinninig together polypropylene and a polymer it helps to prevent water damage if shingles should become damaged. If the underlayment is exposed for too long, however, it can collect moisture, leading to warping and swelling.

3. Shingles

roof repairsShingles are a roof’s first line of defense against the elements. They attach to the underlayment and may be made from asphalt, wood, slate, or metal, among other materials. Many varieties have decades-long lifespans. Yet, if you notice peeling or missing shingles, it could be time for a roof repair or replacement.

4. Soffit & Fascia

Soffit connects the home’s roof and siding. It’s situated below the fascia board, which provides support for your home’s gutters and runs horizontally along the upper perimeter. Soffit acts as a ventilation system to prevent moisture buildup inside the attic, while the fascia board defends the house’s interior and roof against harsh wind and water damage. Without timely gutter cleanings, water can accumulate, leading to rot in the soffit and fascia.

5. Flashing

Roof flashing offers extra moisture protection at critical points in the roofing system, including the joint where the chimney connects. Usually, it’s made from simple materials such as sheet aluminum or galvanized steel. Its role is to direct water away from the roof, but over the years, it may rust and let moisture in.
