A toilet that won’t flush can be an inconvenience, especially since there are several possible culprits behind the issue. While it’s always smart to contact a plumbing service for professional help, troubleshooting the issue in advance can give you an idea of what type of repairs to expect. Here are some of the most common reasons a toilet might not flush.

What Problems Can Prevent Proper Flushing?

1. Clog

Using too much toilet tissue or flushing inappropriate materials can impede the flow. In this situation, try releasing the clog by using a plunger. This should free the clog and allow the water to leave the bowl. If it doesn’t, call a plumbing service if the issue persists.

2. Low Water Level

Toilets need sufficient water to flush properly. If the water in the bowl seems low, lift the lid to check the level in the tank. Ideally, it should be within 1 inch of the top of the overflow tube. Low water levels can result from valve issues or compromised components in the tank.

3. Loose Chain

4. Flapper Issues

If you can see that the chain is still intact, the flapper may still be preventing your toilet from flushing properly. The rubber flapper can wear away over years of use. Replacing this piece requires several steps and tools, so have a professional plumbing service do it.

5. Blocked Inlet Holes

Water travels through inlet holes along the top rim of the toilet bowl during a flush. In homes with hard, mineral-rich water, these holes can become clogged over time. Sometimes, you may be able to clear away debris by shutting off the water supply, flushing the toilet so the tank is empty, and pouring hot vinegar into the valves. The vinegar should eradicate any mineral deposits within a few hours.
