Keeping your car in safe condition is key to being a responsible driver, and that includes regularly changing the oil. While consistent visits to your auto repair shop ensure your engine is always well lubricated, many drivers fall behind. If you can’t remember the last time you had the oil changed, here are common signs your car needs servicing.

How to Know Your Car Needs an Oil Change

1. Illuminated Check Engine or Change Oil Light

Sometimes your car will tell you it’s time to change the oil by flashing the “Check Oil Light.” If your vehicle doesn’t have this feature, your “Check Engine” light will eventually come on instead. Unfortunately, by the time this happens, your car is already far overdue for an oil change and may even need engine repair.

2. Loud Engine Noises

Oil lubricates your engine, eliminating any noise emitted when various parts brush up against one another. Loud knocking or rumbling coming from your engine means it’s low on oil.

3. Exhaust Problems

4. High Mileage

Many auto repair shops recommend changing your oil every 3,000 miles. If you’ve recently taken a long trip or have driven more than usual, you’ve likely reached that mileage sooner than you usually would. Always change your oil after a long road trip or an excessive amount of driving.

5. Change in Oil Color or Texture

Check your oil once a month using the car’s dipstick and take note of the oil’s color and texture. Clean oil has an amber color, while dirty oil is much darker. However, oil can get dark quickly, even if you’ve recently changed it. When checking, wipe the dipstick off and dip it again: if you can’t see the stick through the oil’s color, it’s time for an oil change. A thick or gritty texture is also a sign your car needs servicing.
