The day we invent non-jamming printers and copiers will be a momentous occasion. However, most jams are caused by using the wrong kind of paper or simply loading it improperly, so even machines from the most reliable manufacturers will have their awkward moments. Today, Linthicum Heights-based printer service provider Laser Line wants to share some quick fixes for un-jamming your office copier:

  • Paper Tray Jams: To quickly loosen stuck paper, start by removing one sheet from the middle of the stack, using firm and even pressure. Often, removing one or two sheets from the center like this is enough to loosen the entire stack.
  • Feed Tray Jams: Slide open all feed trays and locate the jam. Sometimes these can be caused by loading the wrong-sized paper into the wrong tray.
  • Back Of Printer Jams: If the above hasn't revealed the jam, open the rear access door. For HP printers, turn the knob counter-clockwise, or remove the two-sided printing accessory by pushing both “release” buttons on either side at the same time. For other brands, there may be another release mechanism.
  • Two-Sided Printer Accessory Jams: Paper jams may also be in the two-sided printer accessory itself. For HP printers, push the button on top to open it.
  • Last Resort: To avoid causing mechanical damage to your printer, always pull paper either from the back, from feeders, or from loading trays. Never lift the front cover to pull out jams except as a last resort. If you must do this, remember to pull slowly.
  • Problems? If you suspect you may have damaged your printer or copier, call Laser Line for a service request, and someone will be glad to get back to you.
