Your HVAC system is a crucial component of your home, but it can draw a fair amount of energy to operate. If you’re struggling with high energy bills, there may be some steps you can take to get them down. Below are several ways you can manage the energy costs of your heating and air conditioning system.

How to Lower Energy Costs From Your HVAC System

1. Adjust the Temperature

Adjusting the temperature, even by a few degrees, can make a difference in your energy bill. Try setting the thermostat 2-3 degrees warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter to reduce energy costs.

Similarly, you can get a programmable thermostat to set the temperature at a less demanding level when no one will be home or when you’re on vacation, minimizing the demand on your system.

2. Switch to Multi-Zone Cooling

HVAC systemMulti-zone cooling divides your home into different areas that can be set to their own temperature. This allows high-traffic areas—like the living room—to be set to a comfortable temperature.

In a less used area—like the laundry room or bathroom—you can set the thermostat to a temperature that puts less strain on your unit. With a multi-zoned system, conditioned air is sent where it matters, and the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to heat or cool the whole house.

3. Keep Up With Maintenance

Regular filter changes and cleanings allow for smooth airflow, instead of the motor being slowed by grit or a clogged filter blocking the flow of conditioned air. Annual inspections will check and lubricate all moving parts to make sure they’re in prime condition, as worn or broken parts can inhibit function and draw more energy. They will also include an efficiency test that will pinpoint any problems with the unit’s performance.

4. Improve Insulation & Sealing of Your Home

If your home is drafty or poorly insulated, your air conditioning system will struggle to keep the temperature regulated, as the conditioned air will escape and outside air will be let in. Check your home for drafts and seal any that you find, including those near windows and doors. If your insulation has settled or molded, replace it.
