As water moves past rocks, it can dissolve and carry with it minerals like calcium and magnesium. Water with a high concentration of these minerals is known as hard water. Here are some of the problems it can cause and why you may want to consider calling a plumber to help with the issues.

3 Common Hard Water Issues

1. Stains

The mineral buildup in hard water can create an orange, rust-like hue on items it touches regularly. Doing the dishes can cause plates to develop stains. The same can happen on tubs and sinks where hard water is run.

To remove the stains from your dishes, tubs, and sinks, try wiping them down with a mixture of half water and half vinegar.

2. Hygiene

plumberThe harder water is, the less it’s able to clean properly. If you shower with hard water, you may notice it leaves hair looking dull and even feeling brittle from the mineral accumulation.

Talk to a plumber about installing a water softener to provide cleaner water so you can achieve the desired level of cleanliness.

3. Water Pressure

Even if the mineral content of your water hasn’t caused noticeable problems yet, it can still be an issue. Minerals may be carried into your pipes where they build up and create blockages.

The water flow may not be stopped completely, but it can be diminished substantially. Any sign of low water pressure means it’s time to call a plumber. Sometimes the pipes can be cleaned, but in other cases, they may need to be replaced.
