As a versatile natural stone with indoor and outdoor applications, limestone has become a popular alternative to concrete and brick hardscaping. If your hardscape design incorporates limestone, knowing the right care and prevention tips will keep the relatively soft stone from sustaining unnecessary scratches and stains.

4 Limestone Hardscape Maintenance Tips

1. Sweep Daily

Eliminate dust, leaves, twigs, dirt, and other debris by sweeping your limestone daily or—at a minimum—a few times a week. Avoid using a vacuum to remove debris since appliance edges can scratch the natural stone. Instead, work with a soft-bristled broom that removes grit and leaves without leaving behind damage. A leaf blower would also be effective at removing unwanted debris.

2. Use a Pressure Washer Twice a Month

Deeplimestone clean your driveway, walkway, or other natural stone hardscapes with a pressure washing machine. Set the device between 1300 to 2300 psi to keep the high-speed pressure from damaging your limestone.

Add a non-acidic, non-toxic cleaner to the machine to kill microorganisms in addition to blasting away algae, mildew, and other tough grime that could penetrate the porous stone. Finish by rinsing with water and drying with a mop or rag to avoid standing water that can cause degradation.

3. Deal With Stains Immediately

Spot treat stains as soon as possible to maintain the limestone’s color. Use a mild natural stone cleaning product or make your own using ¾ cups of white flour and enough hydrogen peroxide to create a paste. Leave the paste on severe stains, such as oil and grease, for about five minutes before rinsing away. Repeat the process as needed to lift stains. Follow the same rinsing and drying procedures listed above.

4. Use a Sealant

Apply a chemical-free sealer to protect limestone from the elements. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and use a roller brush to work it into the stone. Use a sealant every two to three years, depending on the amount of traffic it receives and susceptibility to stains based on the location on your property.
