From auto accidents to slip and falls, all kinds of everyday situations have the potential to cause a catastrophic injury. If you suspect someone has a spinal cord injury (SCI) following some kind of accident, take these essential steps.

What to Do If You Suspect an SCI

1. Call 911

Because they have the potential to be life-threatening and life-changing, spinal cord injuries demand immediate medical attention. Prompt care can also serve to improve the patient’s prognosis. As such, you should call 911 right away.

2. Keep the Head & Neck Still

The more the head and neck are jostled following spinal cord damage, the greater the risk of paralysis. For that reason, you should avoid moving the person until trained medical personnel arrive and accomplish this task.

And if you must move the injured party to safety—out of the way of oncoming traffic, for example—support the head and neck, and try to keep the spine as straight as possible while doing so. You will need the help of another person to support the spine during the transfer. If the person was hurt in a diving accident, do not take him or her out of the water unless conditions are rough. Instead, float him or her face up until first responders arrive.

3. Seek Legal Assistance

To be properly prosecuted, spinal cord injuries require a team of lawyers and experts. Besides establishing fault, an attorney will have to develop plans to provide for the future care that spinal cord injuries often demand. A qualified lawyer will employ vocational experts and develop a life care plan that  provides for future medical and other needs including special-equipped vehicles and residences.
