Most people don’t lend too much thought to garage door maintenance until a problem occurs. Issues with the torsion springs are quite common, given the sheer amount of force they withstand while raising and lowering. Being able to recognize the signs of potential problems will allow you to schedule service repairs before the issue becomes too serious or costly.

How to Identify Issues With Your Garage Door Springs

1. Loud Noises in Your Garage

When springs break, you’re likely to hear it before you see it. If you hear a loud bang or snapping noise coming from your garage, a spring may have broken. Breaks can even occur when the door is closed and not in use.

Check the springs on top of your garage door for gaps or breaks in the coils. Extra space between the otherwise tightly coiled springs can indicate a failing or broken spring.

2. The Door Closes Too Quickly

Garagegarage door doors are extremely heavy, requiring the springs to be durable. When a torsion spring is compromised, it cannot control the full weight of the door as it closes and may result in the door crashing down at an uncontrolled speed.

3. It Appears Crooked or Uneven When Opening

Most garage doors are outfitted with extension springs situated on either side of the door. When a spring on one side breaks, the door may appear crooked when opening. This unevenness is caused by the disparity between the two springs and the weight of the door—the side with the working spring will rise at a faster rate, making it look lopsided.

Other problems associated with a broken or failing extension spring include jerky movements or a cable or spring hanging out of place.
