The windshield of your car allows you to see clearly while protecting you from outside elements that could impede your vision while driving, like rain and dust. If it develops a crack—for instance, after a hailstorm—it’s important to undertake prompt windshield repairs. A crack not only impedes visibility and distracts your attention from the road, but it also makes driving more dangerous. Find out why below.

3 Consequences of a Cracked Windshield

1. Decreased Structural Integrity

When intact, the windshield helps distribute pressure from any impact across the front of the car's structure. A cracked or chipped windshield can't handle as much force.

The windshield is prone to breakage if you experience a front-end collision, and the front of the car is more likely to get crushed. Similarly, if you are in a roll-over accident, the roof of the car is more likely to get crushed. This leaves the vehicle’s occupants at risk.

2. Greater Likelihood of Injury From Shattered Glass

A special adhesive laminate is applied during production so that if the glass shatters or breaks, shards stay stuck in place instead of flying into the passengers' faces. A crack will reduce the effectiveness of this adhesive laminate, increasing the risk of flying glass in a collision.

3. Risk of Ineffective Airbag Deployment

Airbags are life-saving safety features. The windshield serves an essential role in ensuring the passenger-side airbag deploys correctly. It acts as a backstop so that when the airbag releases, it inflates towards the passenger.

If the windshield is cracked, however, it may shatter due to the force of the airbag's release. It then can't serve as this valuable backstop and may inflate out through the opening in the windshield—leaving the passenger unprotected.
