Windows have changed a lot through the years. If your home is more than 20 years old, chances are you may have older window styles, perhaps even metal or wood frames.  Even newer vinyl windows can be problematic due to an incorrect installation or another issue. Besides their outside appearance, there are some sure signs that it’s time to replace your windows.

How to Know When to Replace Your Windows

1. Trouble Opening, Shutting & Locking

Windows should operate smoothly. If they don’t open and shut easily, they may be warped, swollen, or rusty due to moisture getting between the frame and the window. If they have been painted several times, there may be a build-up of paint that gets in the way of the window smoothly sliding up or down.

If you can’t lock your windows, that’s a sure sign of age and a security risk to your family. Rust and excess paint can be removed with sandpaper, but the only remedy for warped or swollen windows is to replace them.

2. Decay & Damage

To check for this, open each window to inspect the sash for evidence of splintered, chewed, or discolored wood. Go outside and look at the window frames as well. Vinyl windows are a good replacement choice since they do not decay, and insects cannot chew through them.

3. Drafts & High Energy Bills

If you see your energy bills increase without a change in rates, it may be your windows. Leaky and inefficient windows make your furnace and air conditioner work harder. Check for gaps that may be letting heat or cool air escape.

Test each window for drafts by running a candle or stick of incense around the frame to see if the flame flickers or the smoke moves. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight to see if the light comes in around the frames. You can compare your energy bills to your neighbors who have houses of the same size as yours. 4. Condensation Between Glass

A little condensation is normal – but not if it is between glass panes. Internal condensation indicates failed seals that can lead to leaks. Puddles on your inside windowsills and soft or chipped frames are signs of leaks.

Mold and mildew can grow in a small amount of standing water. Older metal and wood windows are more prone to this, but you should check vinyl windows as well.

5. Outside Noise

Windows should protect your home from intrusion, weather, and noise. You may have gotten used to outside sounds coming in. Turn off any electronics inside the house and take a listen.  Vinyl windows are constructed to absorb vibrations and noise to give you a quieter home.
