You may have heard the term “self-awareness,” but do you actually know what it means? For most people, developing this state of mind takes practice and is often achieved with the help of a therapist or life coach. To learn more about the meaning of being self-aware, as well as some tips on how to improve your current state of self-awareness, take a look at the guide below.

What Does It Mean to Be Self-Aware?

  • Self-awareness is when you have an accurate perception of who you are as a person (both the good and bad), and that you are aware of how your traits affect other people.

Rather than seeing them as fact, you start to understand that they’re really based on your own perceptions and interpretations, which may not always be accurate. This understanding can lead to a host of positives, including greater empathy, better listening skills, stronger relationships, and improved overall happiness.

Tips for Developing Self-Awareness

An excellent way to improve your self-awareness is to work with a therapist or life coach. There are also several activities you can do on your own to help you become more introspective and mindful. They include:

  • Meditation: This practice is designed to improve your moment-to-moment awareness by focusing on your breath as you inhale and exhale. Some forms also invite you to ask yourself a set of general questions, such as, “What am I trying to achieve?” or “What can I do to change?”
  • Writing: Recording your thoughts and feelings in a journal is an excellent way to nurture self-awareness. When you re-read your entries, you’ll see your experiences from a different perspective. A journal can also help you clarify your life goals and give you a better sense of where and why you may be holding back.
  • Asking for Feedback: Seek out friends, family, and mentors you trust to tell you the truth about situations you may be unsure of. Ask them to call you out if they see you indulging in behavior you want to change.
