At the very least, a broken washing machine is inconvenient, but serious cases can cause ruined floors, soaked drywall, and mold infestations throughout the house. While some mechanical problems are unavoidable, some routine appliance maintenance can extend the life of your washer and prevent annoying, potentially destructive breakdowns. Below are a few key tips for maintaining your washing machine.

How to Maintain Your Washing Machine

1. Check & Replace the Hoses

Cracked hoses are one of the most common causes of washing machine leaks because they’re subjected to constant, intense changes in water flow and pressure, so give them a close inspection on a regular basis. Replace both the hot and cold water hoses immediately if you notice bulging, cracking, or moisture beading around the connections.

2. Clean the Interior & Detergent Dispensers

At least once a month, clean the drum of the machine, wipe down and disinfect the door seals, and carefully wash the soap dispensers. Running an empty load with a couple cups of white vinegar will also kill off mold and prevent foul odors.

3. Don’t Overload the Machine

Heavy loads put significant wear and tear on your washing machine, increasing both your chances of breakdowns and your appliance maintenance costs. Be careful not to overload the machine, and wash bulky, heavier items, such as blankets and overcoats, by themselves or with smaller loads.

4. Place a Pan Under Machine

A simple drip pan can catch condensation and water droplets before they make it to your floor. This can prevent moisture from accumulating under your flooring and leading to mildew or wood rot. However, remember to empty the pan and sanitize it regularly so the standing water doesn’t become a breeding ground for mold.
