Remodeling is a terrific opportunity to add more variety and personality to your home. If you want to upgrade the flooring, there’s no reason why you have to limit yourself to just one. Though it might seem challenging to match tiles, laminate, carpeting, and other styles, if you keep these tips in mind, you can find the right combination.

How to Combine Different Floor Styles

1. Match the Flooring to the Space’s Needs

Before you get started, think about the room you’re working in. For cooler rooms where you’re likely to spend a lot of time barefoot, like bedrooms and living rooms, carpet is a comfortable choice. Wood, laminate, or tile is ideal for areas that get a lot of foot traffic and need to be kept clean, like kitchens, hallways, or bathrooms.

2. Stay Consistent Within a Room

When combining different floor types for a single room, make them look more consistent and intentional by matching their textures, shapes, and colors.

For example, in a joint living room and kitchen with an open floor plan, you can delineate each with flooring instead of walls. Hardwood planks in the living room can transition to long, rectangular ceramic tiles in a similar earthy hue.

In general, it’s best to stick to just two different materials—any more than that can make the room look busy and be difficult to coordinate.

3. Choose Similar Colors

Choose colors and hues that work well together, and try not to contrast too starkly. For example, black marble with adjoining white tile can create an unsettling appearance that limits the open feel of the room.

When colors are more evenly matched, like blue and green tiles or beige stone with deep brown hardwood, the eye will travel easily from room to room, helping to tie the whole house’s appearance together.
