Some homeowners think that a little plumbing leak is harmless and can be ignored without much consequence. On the contrary, drips can signal something more severe, such as corroded pipes. Added to that, not resolving the issue promptly can lead to bigger problems, such as mold, flooding, or damaged walls. If you suspect that there’s a leak in your pipes, here are three ways to know if it‘s time to call in a plumber.

How to Spot Plumbing Leaks

1. Review Past Bills

Numbers don’t lie. If you suspect that there might be a leak in your plumbing system, review your past water bills and check if there has been any significant increase to your regular consumption. A family of four consumes less than 12,000 gallons per month, on average. If the data on your bill doesn’t reflect your actual water usage, call a plumber to check the system.

2. Check the Toilet

plumberThe toilet is one of the most common culprits when it comes to household leaks. Modern, low-flush models use about 1.28 to 1.6 gallons of water per flush, but this amount could soar higher if something’s amiss in the system.

To check if a toilet is dripping, pour a small amount of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color seeps into the bowl after about 10 minutes, then you’ll know there’s a leak.

3. Look at Possible Leak Points

Visually inspect all the plumbing components of your home. From kitchen sinks and showerheads to hose bibs and under-basin cabinets, look for any signs of a leak. If you don’t see any visible water but notice water stains, mold, or warping, call a plumber to request a professional inspection.
