From morning coffee to midnight snacks, your kitchen is one of the most highly trafficked rooms in the house. Therefore, packing up the entire room before the moving service arrives may seem overwhelming. Luckily, you can get a head-start by following these three simple tips.

3 Tips for Packing Up Your Kitchen

1. Appliances

If you’re taking appliances to your new house, you may want to start by cleaning them out. After you’ve wiped down the microwave and set the oven to “self-clean,” focus on disconnecting the machines from the wall.

While some may simply have to be unplugged, refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers may involve other utilities, like natural gas and plumbing. Once they’re cleaned and turned off, tape the doors shut, and wrap them in plastic to prevent cosmetic damage.

2. Food Items

While canned goods are fine on their own, spices, coffee beans, and other opened objects should be wrapped carefully. To prevent leaks, take off the caps and place plastic wrap underneath them before screwing them back into place. If you’re worried about a particular item spilling or breaking during the move, consider donating it instead.

3. Cookware

To protect your breakable items, you’ll want to stock up on cushioning material, tissue paper, and sturdy cardboard boxes. To pack dishes, wrap them in tissue and stack them vertically, placing cushioning material along the edge of the box.

For glassware, repurpose cardboard liquor boxes, which feature separate compartments. Knives should be carefully packed in both tissue and dish towels, then laid flat in the box. Mark these boxes as “sharp” or “fragile” to prevent accidents during the move.
