Whether you have a crumbling driveway or a fractured parking lot, cracks in the asphalt paving are signs of deterioration that must be addressed in a timely manner before they get worse. However, not all cracks are made the same, as different fissures form for a variety of reasons. To learn more about common asphalt cracks, and how to address them, check out the guide below.

What Are the Different Types of Asphalt Cracks?

1. Block Cracking

Block cracking appears as large rectangular cracks that cover an extensive area, like a parking lot. You may notice the issue even if the area receives little traffic because temperature changes cause shrinkage of the asphalt. If addressed quickly while the cracks are still shallow, then patching the cracks alone without resurfacing the entire area is a sufficient repair.

2. Fatigue Cracking

Sometimes referred to as “alligator cracking” due to its resemblance to an alligator’s skin, fatigue cracking features many cracks brought on by load-related deterioration. It can also be caused by an insufficiently thick layer of pavement or a weak base. As a more extensive form of cracking, seek an asphalt paving professional to make the necessary repairs.

3. Edge Cracking

4. Transverse Cracking

Transverse cracking runs perpendicular to the centerline of the pavement. It is typically caused by shrinkage of the asphalt from temperatures or the growth of an existing crack. This form of cracking is sometimes brought on by underlying problems structurally.

5. Reflection Cracking

Reflection cracking occurs over previous cracks in the pavement, or along the surface of asphalt as it deteriorates. It forms from the movement of old pavement and is a form of cracking that may require an entirely new surface to address the underlying cracks underneath. Consult a paving professional for their expert advice on the matter.
