Many people are drawn to the comfort and convenience of gas fireplaces. Yet, as with any feature in your home, they can develop issues over time. Since working with gas requires the right tools and expertise, always call a professional heating contractor if you experience any of the following issues.

When Should You Repair Your Gas Fireplace?

1. Strong Odor

Any time you pick up on the odor of natural gas coming from your fireplace, take note. Most people compare the scent to that of rotten eggs. On its own, natural gas doesn’t have an odor, but mercaptan is added to provide a distinct smell so homeowners can detect it. The scent indicates a gas leak, especially if coupled with a hissing sound. Because gas leaks are dangerous, have everyone exit your home immediately and call a heating contractor for emergency help.

2. Soot Accumulation

The material builds up when there’s an excess of unburned fuel. The issue could result from insufficient oxygen mixed with an excess of fuel, chimney blockages, or improper alignment of embers and logs. It’s also possible the damper needs to be adjusted to achieve the right draft.

3. Pilot Light Issues

Gas fireplaces are equipped with a pilot light. Just as with your home’s furnace, the pilot light must remain on all the time for the system to ignite. If the pilot light doesn’t stay lit, it could indicate an issue with the wiring or a compromised thermopile. In some cases, the pilot light flame may also need an adjustment. If you’ve followed the manufacturer’s instructions for keeping the pilot light on but it still won’t cooperate, a heating contractor can diagnose and address the issue.
