Quilting is a popular pastime that produces quality products that you can use around the home. Designs are completely customizable and can accommodate even the smallest piece of fabric. However, knowing where to start is challenging, especially for those that are new to the process. Below are a few patterns to help inspire your creativity and spark your interest in this hobby.

3 Quilting Patterns for Beginners

1. Log Cabin Quilt Block Pattern

This pattern is traditionally for making baby blankets, and it uses only a few strips of fabrics that result in a smaller product. Start by cutting a square for the center. Then, cut another piece of material so that it’s approximately the same size and attach them. Measure the length of the two squares and cut the next strip to match. Continue in a counter-clockwise direction, measuring the length of each side until you reach the size that you desire.

2. Double Four Patch Rag Quilt

quiltingThis pattern has an unfinished feel, allowing soft rows of thread to stick up around the edge of each fabric square. You’ll need a floral print for the larger squares and four complementary patterns for the additional blocks. Cut the fabrics to the size that you want, and then arrange the smaller quilt blocks according to personal preference. Line each up against the other and sew along the seams to keep them in place. For the batting, many people choose flannel as it is soft and allows you to fray it along the edges to create a rustic look.

3. Nine Patch Bento Box Quilt

For this quilt, you will combine complementary patterns to construct a square-within-a-square design. You’ll need five different pieces of fabric in varying colors. Start by cutting fabrics one and four into 20 patch centers and sew them together to create quilt blocks. Cut fabrics three and five into strips and attach them along the side of one quilt block to expand the pattern. Add a layer of fabrics two and four along the outer edges, and you will have the first full square of the quilt. Repeat this process until the blanket is as long as you want. This may take more materials than other options, but the final product is stunning and comfortable.
