When it comes to preserving the value of a classic car, it’s critical to avoid putting on excess miles—especially if you’re traveling long distances. Fortunately, if you’re headed to a classic car show or need to visit an auto shop, you don’t have to put your valuable vehicle on the road. Instead, you can use an appropriately-sized utility trailer to transport it from Point A to Point B safely. If you’re new to the process, here are a few tips that can help you trailer-tow your classic car with confidence.

5 Tips for Transporting a Classic Car

1.  Enclose for Greater Protection

Although many automobiles are transported with an open utility trailer, owners with classic models sometimes prefer an enclosed cargo area. With the vehicle covered on all sides, it’s less likely to be affected by harsh road conditions and weather elements.

2. Invest in the Right Insurance

Not all types of auto insurance will protect against accidents that occur during trailer transport. In many cases, you’ll likely need to have specialized classic car insurance that accurately reflects the value of your vehicle. Before you hit the road, contact your insurance agent and make sure you’ll be covered for any damage that occurs while hauling.

3. Connect With Care

4. Load & Secure Vehicle

How you load your classic car will ultimately depend on the type of equipment trailer you’re using. For example, some may require you to carefully drive up onto a platform, while others may have lifts.

After your vehicle is on the platform, use straps to tighten down all four corners of the car. In most cases, you should be using four nylon ratchet straps, as well as four axle straps. To ensure a secure hold, attach all straps to the suspension or chassis.

5. Drive to Minimize Disturbances

You should practice driving with the trailer until you’re comfortable with how to gain the right clearance when turning, changing lanes, or backing up.

When you’re hauling cargo on the road, avoid speeding and adjust as necessary to accommodate poor driving conditions, such as rain. If you need to turn or stop, give yourself plenty of room and gently press on the brakes to come to a gradual stop.
