Throughout the summer, your AC unit works hard to keep your home cool and clement. However, this often results in excess energy use, followed by elevated utility expenses. Fortunately, you can make adjustments and improvements to the thermostat that render your system more efficient. HVAC contractors recommend the following tips and tricks.

3 Ways to Set Your Thermostat to Save Energy

1. Set Higher Temperatures

Setting your thermostat too low during the summer causes the AC unit to cycle more frequently and use more power to cool the space. If you set the temperature higher, your system won’t have to run as often to keep the space comfortable.

Work your way up to setting it at 78 degrees. Acclimate yourself to the warmer indoor temperatures by raising the thermostat gradually—one or two degrees per day.

2. Reset the Thermostat at Night

Since outdoor temperatures get cooler at night, you can raise the temperature on your thermostat; that way, the system won’t have to work as hard to compete with exterior air.

Set the thermostat to 78 degrees at night and lower it during the day if you want to make your home cooler. While you’re away for the weekend or on vacation, set the thermostat to 80 degrees.

3. Upgrade the Thermostat

For example, you can program the temperature to rise during the day while you’re at school or work, and set it to cool the space about 30 minutes before you arrive home. Programmable thermostats often allow for remote operation via smartphone or tablet, permitting you to adjust the settings if you accidentally forget to do so manually.
