The Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, or CDPAP program, allows elderly individuals or those with medical needs to choose a caregiver to help with daily activities. Caregivers in the CDPAP program are paid and can perform certain medical procedures, even though they aren't nurses and don't have special certifications. However, they do need to meet the following requirements to qualify.

What You Need to Become a Personal Assistant in the CDPAP Program

1. Be a Qualifying Adult

To participate in this program, the assistant needs to be an adult, and if they're the child of the person requiring care, they need to be at least 21. The designated representative or spouse of the person receiving care cannot qualify. Other family members, friends, and acquaintances can apply to become personal assistants.

2. Provide Documentation

CDPAP ProgramAfter filling the application form, you'll need to provide ID, along with an I-9 form to prove you're eligible for employment in the U.S. and a W-4 for taxes. You'll have to agree to a written care plan as well. If you'll be driving the person receiving care, you need to provide proof of car insurance, as well as a valid driver's license.

3. Get a Physical

Daily care can sometimes be exhausting, so you'll need a physical exam from a medical professional. The exam cannot be more than six months old. It will include information about your vaccinations and potential exposure to diseases like tuberculosis, which may be dangerous for the individual in your care.

It’s crucial to receive a physical to ensure you can handle required tasks without injuring yourself, such as lifting a person from a wheelchair or bending down to pick items off the floor.
