Sun and weather exposure can diminish the look of your gutters over time. However, both vinyl and aluminum systems can be repainted to restore their original appearance. Here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your home improvement project is a success.

4 Steps to Repainting Your Gutters

1. Clear Them Out

guttersWhile you should be cleaning out your gutters on a regular basis to prevent water flow issues, preparing them for a paint job requires a little more elbow grease. Any dirt or debris left behind will damage the new paint, so clean them thoroughly.

2. Apply Primer

Primer creates a strong foundation for your subsequent coats of paint. Make sure you use a primer that is designed for the material you’re painting. For example, when painting an aluminum gutter, a clear acrylic primer is recommended. After priming, wait at least 48 hours before taking the next step.

3. Lay Down the Basecoat

While it can be difficult, be sure to paint the gutter evenly. Some people choose to detach the gutter from the home when painting, but it’s possible to apply a nice, even coat when using the right sized brushes and a little patience. Let the paint cure for the time recommended on the product’s instructions.

4. Apply the Final Coat

Two coats of paint are usually necessary to ensure an even and beautiful look. When choosing paint, look for a brand that protects against sun damage to reduce wear. You can also pick a paint color that complements your home to improve its curb appeal. If you must paint your gutters again, it’s best to remove the remaining paint and reapply all three coats.
