Invisible braces or aligners are a desirable way to straighten teeth, as they are harder to see than traditional metal brackets. In addition to their understated appearance, they are easier to clean and maintain if you take the right precautions. For helpful insight into this process, below are a few do’s and don’ts of caring for them.

Do:

Wash or brush the aligners when you take them out.

Each time you remove your invisible braces, you should remove the plaque and bacteria that have accumulated on them while they are in your mouth. You should wash your trays with an anti-bacterial soap. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the soap off to avoid an unpleasant taste when you put them back in later. You can also brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste to remove plaque buildup.

Wear them as much as possible.

The aligner will only move your teeth to the desired new position if you are wearing them.  If you leave them out for more than an hour at a time, it could allow the teeth to move so that the aligners do not fit properly anymore.

Don’t

Eat or drink while wearing them.

invisible bracesInvisible braces are not made for eating and drinking. The food particles and drinks will get under the aligners.  If this occurs too often it can lead to stains or cavities forming on the teeth.  However, you can drink water while wearing them, as there is no risk of stains or food buildup. Whenever you want to eat, take the aligners out, and brush your teeth before putting them back in.

Don’t skip steps.

The aligners are a well coordinated system.  If you try to rush your treatment by skipping aligners, you will disrupt the system.  This could lead to a longer treatment time or undesirable results.  If you lose or break you aligners, call your dentist as soon as possible to get them replaced.
