It turns out that slipping your spare key under the welcome mat is not the best security strategy. There are much better hiding places that can help keep potential burglars at bay. Once your locksmith makes you a spare key, here’s where you should consider stashing it.

Where Should You Hide Your Spare Keys?

1. Sprinkler

Everyone knows about the fake rock next to the door, but putting your key in an artificial sprinkler is a much better bet. Not only is the idea not widely known, but when it’s placed on the ground, it will mimic a real sprinkler. Furthermore, there is no need to put the sprinkler right next to the lawn adjacent to your door. Put it in a realistic place in the middle of your green space.

2. Birdhouse

Most thieves won’t think to consider the innocent-looking bird feeder, a staple in many yards. Simply tape your spare key to one of the inside walls. That way, even someone passing by won’t be able to get a glimpse of your spare key. As a benefit, you can create a way of drawing birds to your property!

3. Fake Rock

It can still be a great hiding spot if you tuck it away behind the house among other rocks in an inconspicuous place. A thief would have to inspect every square inch of your property to come upon it, and even then, when blended with other rocks, it still won’t seem like a likely suspect.
