We think of trees as being huge, rugged plants with deep roots and strong limbs. However, like every other living organism, they start out small and fragile and will need your help to grow strong and healthy. Below are some steps you can take to help your trees do that.

How to Grow a Healthy Tree

1. Right Location

Not every tree is right for every location. First, choose a species native to your region or appropriate for your climate. Loblolly pines, red maples, various oaks, and hickory are some of the most common species in North Carolina.

Next, make sure you plant the tree where it gets enough sunlight. Some species need more light than others do. For instance, shade-tolerant trees have larger, flatter, horizontally-oriented leaves, such as Sugar Maples, while trees that need more light generally have smaller, thicker, more erect leaves, like the Leyland Cypress. Finally, be aware of any obstructions, aside from shade, that could hinder growth or could cause problems later, such as overhead power lines or buried plumbing.

2. Mulch Yearly

Trees in Greensboro, NCMulch is a protective groundcover—usually wood chips, though sawdust or grass clippings can also work—you should spread around the base and roots of the tree every spring. It provides numerous benefits, such as keeping sunlight from heating the ground up, which helps the soil stay moist, so the tree remains hydrated. Additionally, mulch gradually decays and provides nutrients right at the base of the tree where its roots have easy access.

3. Prune Occasionally

While pruning trees improves their shape and appearance, the benefits are more than just cosmetic. Trimming dead or sick branches lets the tree redirect moisture and nutrients to where they can best be utilized so it can flourish.

Pruning of large limbs should only take place during early spring while the tree is dormant and, if possible, free of leaves. Aggressive pruning puts considerable stress on the tree and can make it sick, which is lessened if it occurs during dormancy. You can, therefore, prune smaller branches throughout the year, as needed. If you dislike heights or if you lack the tools or confidence to prune your trees, consider hiring a landscaping professional for assistance.
